ThembaCare Grabouw

Offering Hope Through Caring

A project of Thembalitsha Foundation
NPO No.  007 490

The challenge we face

In South Africa 1000 people die of HIV / AIDS every day!
5,600,000 South Africans are HIV positive, one of the highest numbers
in the world.

Grabouw in the Western Cape, with a population of 50,000
has one of the highest HIV prevalence rates in South Africa

34% are HIV positive!

The existing government clinic services an enormous area and is overseeing 9300 patients a month, with the numbers increasing monthly due to the HIV / AIDS and Tuberculosis (TB) pandemic.

A matter of great concern to the doctors and nursing staff is that other than our temporary 7 bed facility, there are no overnight facilities available in Grabouw!

Current Situation
Since 2003, we have been supporting people whose lives have been devastated by HIV/AIDS and TB here in Grabouw.  In March 2006 we opened a temporary, 7 bed hospice in-patient facility.  This In Patient facility is the only one of its kind in Grabouw as there are no other hospital beds.

The community work that is done by ThembaCare Grabouw has grown rapidly over the years and we currently assist over 550 HIV men, women, and children in our community.  ThembaCare Grabouw also assists the TB department at the local clinic.  Over 195 TB patients are visited and traced weekly to ensure adherence to the TB medication.

In February 2008 we started an HIV and TB Voluntary Counselling and Testing division. We go into all spheres of the community to counsel, test and educate people about HIV as well as to encourage them to know their status.

The Need
In consultation with the local community in Grabouw, we have identified the most urgent need as hospital beds and community support for the terminally ill and debilitated patients thus a Hospice/Palliative Care Centre. The envisaged facility will have an eighteen bed adult and sixteen bed paediatric In-Patient Unit (medical unit) overseen and run by qualified Doctors and Nurses.

The Solution
Theewaterskloof Municipality have made two erven available on which to build the Palliative Care Centre.  We now need funding for the building of the hospice and the equipment necessary for a facility of this nature.

Our plan is to build a state of the art palliative care centre with wards for men and women, as well as a dedicated paediatric ward.  The centre will also be used to address the community’s much needed programmes namely: support groups, day care, HIV education, voluntary counselling and testing and occupational therapists.
